Supervision

Starting from September 2025, I will begin supervising master students. I hope you have:

• Attention to the empirical world: You should have an interest in everyday life, be thoughtful and passionate, frequently observe the circumstances you stay in and ask yourself, "Why is this happening?" (I don’t want you to simply tell me what research title you want to work on; instead, I hope you can tell me a story and point out a tension or problem within it. Telling a good story and identifying a problem is what I consider the first step of empirical research.)

• Critical thinking ability: You should not blindly follow so-called mainstream ideas, but rather reflect on whether what others say is correct, why it is correct, and whether there might be exceptions. (One of the qualities I hope my graduate students will have is the ability to critically view "correct" and "naturalized" knowledge.)

• Diversity and Inclusion: Instead of simply judging others as right or wrong, I hope you could view the diversity of the world with equality and respect the differences between yourself and others.

• Appropriate English skills: You should be able to read English literature and write in English. (Participated in international conferences would be a significant advantage).

In addition, I don’t mind if you come from a science or engineering background (you could work with me on algorithm research), a social science background (you could work with me on media sociology), or a humanities background (you could work with me on digital humanities). However, I hope your research interests lean towards marginalized group studies, critical algorithm studies, or interpersonal communication studies.
